Since our inception in 1968, we have been one of the largest providers of supports and services to people of all abilities in the community.

SUMMARY: The Skills Trainer’s role is to provide 1:1 assistance and direct skills instruction for youth diagnosed with a developmental disability who are enrolled in the DESE/DDS program. The Skills Trainer will work as part of a family team in the family’s home and in the community when appropriate. Hours vary between 3-6 hours per week depending on individual’s needs.

Skills Trainers—In-Home: assists the individual’s participation in typical home based activities. The goal of the skills trainer is to work in the home with the participant to help develop, increase, or support the participant’s daily living skills development in the areas of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and Independent Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). This may include personal hygiene tasks, chores, meal prep, cooking, laundry or use of phone or other electronic device etc.

Skills Trainers—Community Based:

Assists the individual’s participation in community based activities. The goal of the skills trainer is to accompany the individual in the community to help increase the participant’s community living skills Typical examples, may include learning to use the library, making a purchase at a store or participating in a group based community setting like a swim or gym program.

Skills Trainer Service Requirements:

  • This service is not respite care, it is skills based instruction.
  • Payment for support staff over a vacation period will be reviewed by DDS Area Service Coordinator and then the Regional DDS Family Support Director.
  • The same Skills Trainer is encouraged to provide supports both in-home and in the community, as applicable based on the individual’s plan.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Work as part of a team of family members and other professionals who are involved in the individual’s care and training.
  • Follow the behavior plan developed to assist the individual in learning needed skills.
  • Work in the home with the individual to help develop, increase, or support the individual’s daily living skills. This may include personal hygiene tasks, laundry, chores, and meal prep for individual.
  • Plan for and provide support for community-based activities (as required) that are tailored to the individual’s strengths and interests.
  • Understand and support the goals and objectives of the program.
  • Provide transportation for the individual when needed.
  • Document activities and report on activities and progress toward meeting goals.
  • Respond to requests for meetings and information from supervisor.
  • Access and read Agency email account and Intranet at least weekly.

QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor degree or appropriate experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the need to maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of and respect for cultural diversity.
  • Skill in communicating orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and adults with a developmental disability.
